Last year the 50 Million Missing Campaign created an online gender survey which went live from December 2008 to May 2009. The survey has since come to a close and the results are in.
The pilot survey is the underpinning of extensive ground research. This survey and analysis is momentous for researchers and organisations alike as it gives important insight into respondent’s attitudes and perceptions regarding various gender issues, which are in turn important in creating awareness and effective change. The eventual aim is to create gender sensitive and healthier communities, issues that resonate throughout all aspects of ASTI’s work.

I draw this to everyone’s attention not only because the analysis and findings make for a compelling read, but also to draw focus to one of the 12 questions asked in the survey:

Q12: In a news program on TV you see the case of a young woman who was badly disfigured when she was attacked with acid by a man whose advances she had rejected. Her facial features are destroyed, she’s blinded and can barely speak. What kind of an effect would this program have on you?

A. As bad as it is, you hear about cases like this quite often and most probably, after the program is over, you might not think or speak about this case again.
B. It makes you very angry and you think about that poor girl for many days after that, and you discuss it with your friends and people you know.
C. It has a big effect on you and you try to seek more information about this girl, and want to see if you can offer help.
D. None of the above.

We at ASTI are interested in hearing your views and answers to the above question. What would your reaction to this TV program be? Or rather, what effect has programs documenting the human rights abuse of acid violence had on you?
