New Scholarship Fund in Memory of Dedicated Burns Nurse
ASTI’s longest-running volunteer plastic surgeon Mr. Ron Hiles has initiated a scholarship programme in the name of Kakoli Adhikary, a highly valued nurse at ASFB, who will be dearly missed.
Mr. Hiles, who believes this initiative will be a good way to uphold what she fought all her life, will be donating £100 every year towards this fund, and is urging others to join in this effort.
The scholarship fund is to pay for specialist training for burns care nurses for ASTI’s partner in Bangladesh.
In 2001, Ms. Adhikary developed ASFB’s occupational therapy facility from scratch, which has proved to be an invaluable resource for the organisation for survivors of acid and burns violence in Bangladesh.
As the Executive Director of ASFB Ms. Monira Rahman told us, “This was her first home. Night after night she has spent in the ASFB hospital to continue the operation of the acid victims. In the last two years, despite her own pain and suffering, she never thought of herself as separate from ASFB. She served acid survivors until she was physically unable to do so.”
When told about the scholarship, Ms Rahman stated, “We have put a photo of her with all the words that we are receiving for her in our hospital. The next generation will be inspired to see her commitment and dedication.”
Mr. Ron Hiles commented that, “Ms. Adhikary’s cheerful manner, her superb skills and her dedication to people were an example to us all and the world will be a poorer place without her presence but strengthened by the memory of her selfless service.”
