Many Congratulations to Monira!

Human Rights defender and Executive Director of the Acid Survivors Foundation in Bangladesh (ASF-B) was one of five outstanding women who were awarded the 2009 Americans for UNFPA Honorees for the Health and Dignity of Women. In recognition of their exemplary leadership on behalf of women everywhere, this award has showcased the powerful global commitment taken-up by some exceptional individuals.

Monira Rahman has been working for the Acid Survivors Foundation in Bangladesh since its humble beginnings. Monira and her team have been instrumental in raising colossal awareness of acid violence, whilst also ensuring that survivors live their life with dignity and strength.

As Monira says, “It’s important to see the courage of the survivors. They’re making a big impact in society by breaking all these barriers, changing societal attitudes towards women. If we are able to stop violence against women, if we are able to stop discrimination against women, then we are able to promote women’s development and women’s empowerment.”

Monira’s dedicated commitment to creating a society where women live a life free from fear of violence is an inspiration to us all. Many congratulations Monira from everyone at ASTI. You are a great role-model for many and may your example shine.
