Latest Acid Attacks Reported from Around the Globe
In the month of November 2009, several incidences of acid violence have been reported. They have occurred in the countries where we know acid violence is common – where the Acid Survivors Foundation’s operate – as well as in other countries: Malaysia, Thailand, and the United States of America.
Below is some brief news from differnet corners of the world:
Thailand
In Phuket, Thailand, a man threw acid in the face of a 27 year old woman, leaving her with injuries to her left eye and burns to her body. Several such incidences have taken place in Phuket before, but usually are similar to patterns of acid attacks in Cambodia, where there are higher incidences of women attacking other women. With this recent attack in Phuket, the police believe the attack may be a case of mistaken identity.
Malaysia
In bordering country Malaysia, a 17 year old girl suffered serious injuries to the front of her body as well as her eyes after she was attacked by her father, Teil Siew, a civil servant working with the Penang Municipal Council (MPPP). He has been charged in court for injuring his daughter, and also for the
murder of his wife who also suffered from severe acid burns and died nine hours after the attack. It is believed that the attack was masterminded after a family feud.
Greece
The Greek government has decided to offer 1 million Euros as an incentive for arresting the acid attackers of the Bulgarian immigrant in Athens last year. Kostadinka Kuneva suffered from heavy injuries to her face and body, and lost sight in one eye. As of yet, the perpetrators are still unknown. It is speculated that the attack was linked to Kostadinka’s active work as a trade union leader.
USA
In Los Angeles, a girl was raped, beaten, and then had acid poured over her story by her angry and jealous boyfriend on a Halloweens night. Police said, “…the most brutal of all is that he poured acid on her face, body, and tried to make her drink it too… to teach her a lesson”. The perpetrator of this cruel incident of domestic violence has still not been captured.
