Katie Piper - Channel 4 Programme on Acid Violence

I have been working to support survivors of acid attacks for almost 3 years and still remain shocked at the pain and suffering that we can intentionally cause each other. Attacking someone with acid remains, in my mind, one of the most appalling forms of violence.

Given the extent of the injury Katie experienced it is a credit to her, and all those who have supported her, that she has made so much progress in her rehabilitation. While watching the programme, it was such a pleasure to see Katie move forward – whether walking to the shop or hearing the results of the court case.

I think it is important to emphasize the important role Katie’s family seems to have played. Clearly all those involved in her medical and psychological rehabilitation have had a significant impact. However, it is her family who have been there every day helping Katie with the exercises and therapy that will, for example, ensure that her wounds do not contract.

As this programme rightly captures, the process of rehabilitation for a survivor requires an integrated approach that involves many different disciplines. We believe that a survivor’s journey of recovery must not only involve medical procedures and physical therapy, but also psycho-social, legal and community support.

Congratulations to Channel 4 for putting on a very well done programme. And, congratulations to Katie and her family – the stars of the show.
