Durjoy Appeal Success!
In September 2009 ASTI issued an appeal to help its sister organisation in Bangladesh raise crucial funds for 5 year old acid survivor Durjoy travel to Hong Kong for further surgery. Thank you to everyone who responded to the appeal. We can say with great joy that due to the kindness of our supporters near and far we have obtained sufficient support to enable Durjoy and his parents to travel once more to the Prince of Wales Hospital in Hong Kong.
Durjoy is clearly a tragic case. As an infant he was fed acid by a jealous aunt and he will continue to need periodic surgery as he grows up. Initially we were able to help him travel to Hong Kong when he was an infant, and now at 5 years old he needs to go back for further treatment. The surgery he will be undergoing represents the most up-to-date procedures and we are very grateful to Professor Andrew Burd for taking on this essential life saving work.
With your generous help Durjoy, his parents, and physiotherapist Monwara Sultan will be flying out in the next week for a total duration of 4 months in Hong Kong. From ASTI and the ASF in Bangladesh we would like to thank everyone for their efforts – particularly Sir Michael Kadoorie, Professor Andrew Burd, and Christopher Lavender, and all Durjoy supporters around the world for their kindness and prompt willingness in responding so open heartedly and with such generosity.
Here in London, the Acid Survivors Trust International are committed to helping our sister organisations in those countries in which there is a problem of acid violence.
In order for ASTI, and our international network of local charities, to continue to make a significant difference to the numbers of acid attacks, the survival rates of victims, and the capacity of survivors to live a worthwhile and productive life, we need financial support. Please donate whatever you can today.
Please keep checking the News section of the website for further updates on Durjoy’s procedure and developments in Hong Kong.
*Again, thank you to everyone who helped make this appeal a success! *
