ASTI Trustee Dr Ron Hiles Talks - Skin Awareness Day
Dr Ron Hiles, ASTI Trustee and volunteer Surgeon, attended a talk organised by RAFT. Last week Dr Hiles gave a talk about acid burns and how it effects the skin. RAFT are a chartiable trust specialising in restorative treatment of skin’s appearance and function. The research group organised a talk as part of Skin Awareness Day. RAFT are researching to find the best skin alternative. Currently what is available are grafts which are superficial “scaffolds” for the skin. What would be ideal is to be able to create a skin substitute – composite skin which can assume the function of skin too. I asked Dr Hiles about the recent coverage of face transplants and his thoughts on that – there is still a long way to go on these as again such surgery procedures require donors and are still in the early days. This talk was a good example of how charities can collaborate and exchange ideas in order to help progress research in this field
