ASTI Chair Dr John Morrison Reports from India
As chair of ASTI, I paid a short 3 day visit to Kolkata whilst on holiday in Bangladesh. I met the trustees of the newly formed Acid Survivors Trust – India (ASTIND) and was briefed on developments.
The first task of ASTIND is to find out how many acid survivors there are in both Kolkata and the surrounding area. The way they are planning to do this is to advertise in the press and on the radio asking for survivors to come to a hospital in Calcutta where they will be assessed by doctors.
I also gave an illustrated talk on the work of ASTI to the Rotary Club of Kolkata. This is the oldest Rotary club in Asia and they proudly recall some of their previous speakers which include Mahatma Ghandi. I appealed to the Rotary members to assist in helping to develop support for survivors and they agreed to explore working with ASTIND.
More to follow from my travels…
