Acid Attacks to be Criminalised in Cambodia

Cambodian authorities are looking to pass a law imminently to make acid attacks a crime. This independent law will mean this crime will have specific sentencing rather than go under the guise of attempted murder. To have a separate law for acid violence sends out a clear message to perpetrators and their potential victims that justice will be done. The article posted at khmernewstoday discusses the regulation of acid sale. In an ideal world this would be a great solution but the reality is that often such acid is retracted from ordinary household items. Also age bar for acid purchase is not a deterrant as those who commit these attacks are already adults -see our survivors stories on this website. The real issue is awareness and education – to make communitites rise up against this form of violence. We do this by changing the law – making acid violence receive harsh sentencing. ASTI welcomes and anticipates this move by the Cambodian government. Our affiliated charity ASF Cambodia foundation is preparing for a lot of work ahead to ensure in country care and support is adequate for survivors. Contact us if you wish to donate
